If you listen or read the interviews with artistes, you'd notice most of them say they listen to the beat before they come up with their lyrics. This alone reveals the importance of music producers in the music industry, especially the Afrobeats genre.

It is the job of the artiste to sing and record but the sound arrangement and the mixing of vocals and instrumentals is done by the producer. How good a song comes out 70-80% of the time depends on the producer and not just the singer. Most hit-songs today can be credited to the producer and as an artiste, working with the right producer would accelerate your progress by a huge mile.
